The University of Oregon (UO), a well regarded public flagship university for research and higher education in Eugene, was established in 1876. With 155 students and five staff members when it first began operations, the fraternity today boasts over 3,000 members.

The University of Oregon is ranked #701–750 in the globe in the QS globe Rankings 2024. The University of Oregon has an 86% acceptance rate for international applicants, indicating that it is not a very selective university.

The Universities Research Association (URA), the Association of American Universities (AAU), and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) are among the organizations with which the university is affiliated. Additionally, UO is a member of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).

The historic indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people, Kalapuya Ilihi, is home to the University of Oregon. The US government forced the Kalapuya people to relocate to the Coast Reservation in Western Oregon after signing treaties between 1851 and 1855, depriving them of their ancestral lands.

The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians are home to the majority of Kalapuya relatives today, and they continue to make significant contributions to their communities, the University of Oregon, Oregon, and the globe at large.

Among the 2,041 professors at the University of Oregon who teach and conduct research are three Pulitzer Prize winners and one Nobel Prize winner. Approximately 22,760 students, 46.7% of whom are male and 53.3% of whom are female, are enrolled in various university programs at this time. At UO, there are 16:1 students to faculty members in classes that typically have 20 students in them.

We pay our respects to the nine federally recognized Indigenous Nations of Oregon, as well as the Burns Paiute Tribe, the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, the Coquille Indian Tribe, the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, and the Klamath Tribes.

We observe the Indigenous protocol of acknowledging the original people of the land we occupy. We pay respect to all the other displaced Indigenous peoples that live in Oregon, as well as to the many other tribes who have ancestral ties to this region.

The Campus Atmosphere:

The university’s 295-acre campus, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains, is home to an arboretum of over 4,000 trees belonging to over 500 different species.

The Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center, the University of Oregon’s hub for academic and career advising, Willie and Donald Tykeson Hall, which houses the Division of Equity and Inclusion, the University Career Center, and the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact are just a few of the recent additions to the campus. The campus’s original buildings date back to 1876.

East 15th Avenue and Columbia Street are the addresses of the Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Remarkable for its holdings of Asian and Northwest art, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is located across campus and is a part of the American Alliance of Museums.

As a participant in the Association of Research Libraries, the University of Oregon Libraries serve as a vital research resource for academics from all across the Northwest. Oregonians sixteen years of age or older can check out the libraries’ three million volume collection for free through the Oregon Card Program.

PK Park, Hayward Field, Autzen Stadium (54,000 seats), the Student Tennis Center, the Marcus Mariota Sports Performance Center, the Casanova sports Center, the Moshofsky Center, Papé Field, Jane Sanders Stadium, PK Park, and Matthew Knight Arena are some of the campus’s sports facilities.

Creativity and Adventure:

Students at the University of Oregon choose their courses from the Robert Donald Clark Honors College, six professional schools and colleges, and departments and programs within the College of Arts and Sciences. The university’s 23,202 undergraduate and graduate students are supported by 1,992 faculty members, 44 librarians, and 1,470 graduate and research assistants as friends, mentors, and colleagues.

Of all students, half are from Oregon, 46% are from other states, and 4% are international. Students from different backgrounds get to know people they may not have otherwise met, which is a great advantage in a society where relationships on the national and international levels affect day-to-day living.

Campus life is characterized by teaching, research, and a shared attitude. Through their participation in research initiatives, faculty staff and students help the institution win competitive research prizes worth over $180 million. The university’s scientific departments are well-known across the country for their contributions to fields including computer science, genetics, materials science, neurology, and optics.

The esteemed American Academy of Arts and Sciences counts eleven active faculty members in addition to four emeritus faculty members. Four retired faculty members and seven current faculty members have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Both an active faculty member and an emeritus faculty member have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

Enrollment of Faculty at University of Oregon:

There are 23,202 students enrolled at Oregon University overall as of Fall 2023. There are 19,568 undergraduate students and 3,634 graduate students between them. About 10% of all students at the University of Oregon are overseas students.

In terms of ethnic structure, a significant number of students accepted during the Fall 2023 admissions are Black/African American, Asian American, and Hispanic/Latino.

We strongly advise prospective students who want to transfer from another community college or university to Oregon State University to plan their campus visit on a Tuesday or Friday, since we will be hosting a transfer tour and general admissions presentation on those days! But, we promise to provide you a wonderful visitation experience on whichever day you come.

It is strongly advised that admitted students for fall 2024 plan a daily visit to the campus! You will be able to meet current students, connect with your academic major, take a tour of the campus, visit a residential hall, and make sure OSU is the right fit for you.
